The month in which we produced the October issue of Meetings Today was like no other I remember. Massive wildfires scorched the West, major earthquakes brought misery to Mexico and two Cat 5 hurricanes tore through the Gulf Coast, inundating the Houston area
with a deluge never before seen in the U.S. and decimating many islands in the Caribbean while
causing a significant damage in Florida. And this was just as of press time in the third week of
September, when at least one other major hurricane, Maria, was churning toward land.
Of course, our industry will suffer and then recover, but more importantly, so many lives have
been lost or severely impacted by this almost unfathomable carnage wrought by nature.
As soon as Hurricane Harvey really showed its
stripes following landfall in Texas Aug. 26, we shifted
gears to cover this monumental event in our news
coverage the following week, and also put out feelers
for planners who had meetings affected by the
massive storm. At this point, Hurricane Irma was
just beginning to brew over western Africa, rapidly
intensifying as it
aimed at South Florida. Would it wipe out Miami, or head
west toward Tampa? No one really knew at the time.
Our cover story is the result of several meeting planners
getting back to us with their personal stories of navigating
calamity. There were last-minute cancellations and postponements as well as decisions that the show must go on.
We hope you discover something you can take away
from our coverage, because aside from protecting the finances of the organizations you plan for, it may save lives.
We will continue to cover how destinations have been
affected by these disasters—it appears many have really
dodged a bullet—and in the coming months will strive
to bring you the information you need to make sure your
meetings will continue to navigate the storm.
